Q: Please describe your very first coming into awareness about Feng Shui.
A: I’m not sure there was a defining moment that brought about awareness of “Feng Shui”. As a child, growing up in an unstable environment, I had an innate drive to make my bedroom my “safe place”. It was the only thing I felt I had any control over. Of course, I wouldn’t have known I was doing feng shui back then (starting in the late 60s), but I was extremely mindful of my surroundings and even how they influenced others. Everything had to be in its place. As a little girl my stuffed animals and dolls were handled with so much love and care. As a teen in the early 80’s, I was inspired one day after school to rearrange the furniture in our living room (it was just my mom and I). I often didn’t know what kind of mood she’d be in when she got home and was a bit nervous about how my idea of change would be received. Initially, her coming home was typical, but when she turned the corner to see the “new” living room she got a big smile on her face and complimented me saying she would have never thought of arranging the room like that. I felt the difference in her. In us. And it wasn’t just the arrangement of the furniture that changed things. It was me physically pushing sofas and chairs around the room, sitting on them to test the view, and then picking up and actually moving items around. It was the action of it all that created a shift in me. Then throughout the years I would hear about feng shui “cures” from various sources. Upon completion of intensive studies under a Buddhist Meditation Master, and really feeling like memories of home had been stirred up within me, I began to seek out formal feng shui training and certification. At that point the stars aligned and I was divinely guided to my Feng Shui Master.
Q: What is your branch of Feng Shui? How have you made it your own?
A: My go to aspect of feng shui that not only excites me, as well as my clients and students, but also is the very first step in any application of any school of feng shui is the BaZi (or 4 Pillars Chinese Astrology) chart. Just can’t imagine not having those profound insights to inspire a truly custom and unique feng shui experience for my clients. I don’t read the charts necessarily the way a traditional astrologer would. For the most part it’s there. However, having done around 600 readings, I’ve really been able to track patterns in events, behaviors, challenges, successes…you name it. My intuition and guidance from Spirit has allowed me to create such a comprehensive chart with feng shui recommendations that I haven’t seen anywhere else.
Q: How has Feng Shui changed your life?
A: I’ve been professionally consulting and teaching since 2005. Not only has feng shui made remarkable differences at home, in my personal life and that of my family, but the biggest change has been in my connections to people and being able to serve them. I have an interesting dynamic in my own 4 Pillar chart. I have a Dragon that desires to live outside the box and not be bound by the mundane. I also have a Dog in my chart — who is loyal to humanity and wants to serve. My feng shui business and school allow me to feed both of these parts of myself. When I leave a class or consultation I am on cloud nine — I know this is my purpose.
Q: Describe your school’s approach to teaching Feng Shui.
A: The Yang Earth Dog in me strives for practicality in my teaching. My goal is to take abstract concepts and present them in a manner that feels doable. It’s not about dumming it down. It’s about elevating someone’s awareness and experience with solid core concepts, awakened intuition, lots of practice, and support within our community of grads. I don’t offer online classes. I get asked about it a lot. But I want to be sitting in front of you, face-to-face. I want to see your eyes roll or your arms fold in front of you telling me you’ve had enough. I want to see the light bulb turn on when the lesson clicks in. Where two or more are gathered…there I shall also be. The group energy is an important component and the feeling of support and inspiration you get from one another is priceless.
Q: What is the newest addition to your curriculum?
A: The newest addition to my curriculum is an added piece to the field work. Aside from charts and consultations, I require each student to submit a Creative Integration Project. Whatever that looks like for them. I want them to tell me, or show me, how they will be integrating this practice or knowledge into their life or business. I had one student create a flyer for her business. One gal wrote up how she will use feng shui to enhance her coaching services (and ended up using that copy for her website). There needs to be a plan at the end of the training, because there is a lot of excitement and momentum right out of the gate and that can easily dwindle if there’s not some direction in place.
Q: What is the latest area of expansion for your school?
A: The latest area of expansion in my school is the group trainings. I used to only teach one-to-one. But I could tell my students were missing out. They were missing out on that group energy and having that other student in the class ask a question when they couldn’t think of one.
Q: Besides yourself, what does your school offer that is unique to Feng Shui training opportunities?
A: I believe we are multi-dimensional beings with complex lives. The more layers we understand and have in our toolbox the better we are able to assist our clients, friends, and family at whatever level they are. I layer Form School, Classical Feng Shui, BTB, Chakras, Numerology, and the 5 senses into my material. You never know what kind of tool you can use to connect with your client. Once for me, it was simply comment about a cast on a client’s left wrist and my mentioning the color orange and the Sacral Chakra that started a pivotal conversation that I’m not sure I would have gotten to without that knowledge.
I also offer continuing education classes for my students, like advanced Flying Stars.
Q: What is your guiding philosophy about teaching Feng Shui?
A: My guiding philosophy in teaching feng shui is my desire to pay it forward. Amazingly gifted and generous teachers have shown up in my life and openly shared with me, answering my ever-persistent questions. How can I possibly hold onto all of that myself? It must be passed along. There is something special in honoring the sacredness of the ancient schools and their traditions, but there’s also something special about them that can be adaptable and stand the test of time even in the most modern of settings.
Q: What is your favorite nugget of wisdom about using Feng Shui yourself?
A: Mindfulness. Feng Shui took my mindfulness practice to a whole other level. It has given purpose and meaning to everything in a more tangible way.
Q: What additional training does your school offer or plan to offer?
A: One of my dreams is to have VIA grad/practitioner retreats. Some of my students fly into Utah for the training’s and some are local. I would love to have a way we can all connect for a few days and provide a place for them to share their wisdom with one another. My belief is that we really only have two main roles in life…to be a student or to be a teacher. That’s a fine line to walk and anytime I can encourage my students to teach is a plus for all of us!
