It was an incredible treat to interview Tanya Jahnke for this month’s Member Spotlight. Read more from IFSG member, Katherine Graham…
I’ve admired Tanya Jahnke’s obvious business acumen and beautifully composed Facebook posts for some time and can attest that there is great substance backing her enviable style. Talking to her on the phone for the first time was like talking to an old treasured friend. Tanya is open, upbeat, friendly and had lots of great stories to share about her 22 years as a feng shui consultant. Hearing her speak about her work you immediately understand that feng shui is her true passion and that her clients are lucky to work with her.
The interview was so juicy, so informative and fun, I was absolutely kicking myself for not recording it, however, I did get some good details on how she works and what makes her tick so let’s dive right in:
Q. How did you get started as a feng shui consultant?
A. 22 years ago I was in a metaphysical bookstore owned by a friend who felt I should read this book about Feng Shui. It was like “WOW!”, this is what I have been doing all my life! It was an instant Soul connection and resonance to feng shui. After devouring that book, I sought out information about feng shui wherever I could- books, workshops and studying with various Feng Shui teachers. Each year going deeper, learning Space Clearing, personal energetic clearing and transcendental cures and rituals–along with honing and gaining confidence in the intuitive hits I would receive that have guided me in my work. Developing my intuitive gifts over this time and working with clients has been a great blessing.
Q. What is one thing that you think is important to communicate to your clients about feng shui?
A. My biggest message to clients is that Feng Shui is totally customizable. There is no one-size-fits-all template or rule book. I try to convey to my clients that you are in relationship with your home—it is a living, breathing metaphor of your life. I like to remind my clients that it’s a process. Sometimes it works overnight but usually it takes a little longer. Even though feng shui can seem like magic, in order to really do the work and make the necessary shifts, it takes some patience+love+intention. In my opinion, Feng Shui is a lifestyle and we’re in a constant energetic dance with our home.
Q. Have there been times when your intuitive gifts have seemed more like a curse than a blessing?
A. I have learned how to become a channel for my clients. Some may think they are calling for one thing, but I can tap in to what they really need and serve them on this higher level. One lesson I have learned about my intuition can be summed up by the phrase “don’t answer the door if no one is knocking.” Meaning, I don’t offer information to someone if they aren’t asking for it. They need to be ready and willing to receive the information I am able to give them.
Q. How do you get around the fact that most people really have little idea what feng shui actually is?!
A. I have learned, over time, to speak about feng shui in a much more mainstream, accessible way. I explain to my clients that feng shui works no differently than say your Wi-Fi or gravity or electricity. You don’t have to believe in gravity for it to work. I let their level of knowledge and their comfort level guide the way I introduce or discuss certain feng shui topics so that they are led in a way that is intriguing to them but that also teaches them to hopefully see, live and experience their space with fresh Feng Shui eyes and inspires them to live life on a deeper and more connected level.
Q. What is your biggest goal for the next year?
A. I am planning to launch my first feng shui course in the next few months! It is very exciting but also like giving birth- downloading it in a way that can reach a magnitude of people and help them in a profound way. My ultimate goal is to demystify feng shui and to remove all fear+superstition. I want people to experience it instead as a living, breathing relationship with their home and inspire them to use their home as a 3-D vision board for their best life and achieve their greatest goals and desires.
Q. Have you ever hired a feng shui consultant?
A. Yes! I have hired several over the years and each one was different. I’m super picky about who I allow to mess with my energy, but my favorite consultant spoke the language of the Five Elements, which is my love language. It’s always fascinating to receive Feng Shui insights from a peer that you trust and admire….because we can’t see our own blocks.
Q. If you could send a message to newbie consultants, what would it be?
A. We all have our own unique gifts to share. Your style of consulting will be different from others because it will ultimately be the outcome and result of the unique combination of your life experience, your individual talents and also how passionately you pursue your course. You’ll attract the perfect beginning clients and you’ll learn SO much on your Feng Shui journey. You receive as much as you give—I have found that each case study deepens my connection and wisdom at a subtle level.
Q. What life experience has most impacted your work as a feng shui consultant?
A. I am an only child and super close to my family– however both of my parents died from cancer. I was there for both of them to help them transition to the other side. I learned from this and also through my intuitive gifts that there is nothing to be afraid of! The vibration of death and birth are the exact same, they are identical. Do not be afraid of death, or better yet, do not be afraid to fully live! Design the life you want with the understanding that none of us are promised another day. Look at your goals, your to do list, your worries and ask, “If I was dying tomorrow, would this matter? Is this action contributing to my legacy?” Cut away the detritus and LIVE full out!
