It was my great honor to connect with featured IFSG member, Bette Steflik, owner and professional consultant of Shen Men Feng Shui in Portland. She is humble, masterful, intuitive and kind beyond words. I hope you’ll enjoy our conversation! From Tanya Jahnke, IFSG Board Director of the Virtual Chapter
Q: Please share with the us how you came to find Feng Shui?
A: It was not one seminal event, but rather a series of small introductions to Feng Shui that convinced Bette to pursue the Feng Shui Path. Combining her artistic background, intuition and design aesthetic, Bette began her Feng Shui studies in 1999 with Ann Marie Holmes (3 years), studied with Katherine Metz in 2005 for 5 years and has taken countless other courses with Lillian Bridges, Edgar Sung and many others during her 16+ year Feng Shui career.
Q: What do you love most about Feng Shui?
A: Bette loves the Yin/Yang aspect, the subtle relations between the seen and unseen, that what she sees/intuits can transform the lives of her clients and placing items intentionally has a deeper meaning and sends a message that translates into a happier home and life. It’s practical, but it’s also profound. It’s all about connection. As Bette shared, “Feng Shui is a metaphor, it’s poetry.”
Q: Tell us a bit about your personal Chi Cultivation practice and what inspires you.
A: As Professor shared with Bette, cultivating your personal Chi encompasses 90% of the consultation. When your Chi is strong, Destiny and Karma will align you with the ideal client. Bette started to meditate, using Professor’s meditations on a daily basis and she feels it has helped her to hone her gifts and fine tune her intuition. Bette says, “Creating a place of emptiness is so important in this work.” Bette also loves to garden, horseback ride, do Qi Gong and be outside in nature. Bette loves to witness Nature as a Teacher, noticing it’s dynamic energy, always in movement….and aligns her path with it to create personal vitality.
Q: What is your favorite Feng Shui success story?
A: Bette was called to do a consultation for a couple that were sick and needed to sell their home. Self-employed artists, deep in debt, they couldn’t pay their mortgage. Bette arrived to a Feng Shui nightmare, with the master bedroom at the top of the stairs and the staircase rolling out the front door. Bette made several Feng Shui adjustments, most critical the bedroom. Within 1 month, the house sold (after 2 years of being on the market!) and the husband received a job opportunity across the country. The couples’ health improved, they followed opportunity, and they called Bette to share that it was in direct relation to her consultation.
Q: What are your 3 best qualities?
A: Intuitive, knowledgeable about the 5 Elements in spaces and clients, and able to draw out the hidden qualities and desires to help her clients on a deeper level.
Q: Would you like to share any upcoming projects or events?
A: Bette teaches regularly throughout her community, and she would love to combine writing and her passion for illustrating to create a children’s book.
Q: Please share one unknown fact about you with the Feng Shui Family.
A: Bette takes her sweet shih tzu dog, Coco (short for Coconut, not Coco Chanel!) on daily walks. People often stop Bette to complement her adorable dog and Bette “talks” for Coco, channeling her sweetest dog voice of course! 😉
