6 Bedroom Feng Shui Tips for Sleep and Support

Why is the bedroom important?
Your bedroom is where you spend a significant amount of time – 1/3 of your life in fact! It’s the space that rejuvenates you and where you rest. This is also the room that is closest to your body and the most intimate. It is closely connected to your health and also to your Partnerships, no matter where it is located within the home. The bedroom is intended for two things only… Rest and Romance! Anything not related to these two things should be placed elsewhere in your home. 

Tip #1 Make your bed daily
You would not come into a luxury hotel and appreciate or expect to see an unmade bed. Making your bed signals a fresh start to the day and welcomes you at the end of the day with a sense of peacefulness.

Tip #2 Ensure you have a solid headboard and foot board
Solid headboards provide support and backing for you in your life, within your business and with your health. They also help couples feel supported by one another.

If you have a headboard that is slatted, remedy this by weaving scarves or material through the headboard slats or placing material behind it. One of my clients hung a cherished quilt over her slatted headboard and immediately felt more supported and slept better!

If you do not have a headboard/foot board, purchase one or for a temporary fix, you can paint a headboard on the wall or paint the wall behind the bed a different color than the rest of the room. Another quick fix I used in a temporary living space was to hang a sari or scarf behind the bed to act as a headboard.

Tip # 3 Clean out under your bed
Make sure there is nothing under your bed as things and clutter under the bed relate to emotional baggage or communication breakdown. The items under your bed can also cause sleep issues. I had one couple storing some things under their bed. She was sleeping fine and he was not. Under his side of the bed, they were storing a relative’s relic gun! If you must store other things under the bed, make sure they are soft things like blankets or clothing.

Tip #4 Revamp your vision wall
You vision wall is at the foot of your bed. This is the last thing you see before you go to sleep at night and the first thing you see in the morning. One of my clients had her work task list posted on that wall! Can you imagine the stress you would feel if this is the first and last thing you saw before you went to sleep? Instead, place a painting or artwork on that wall that inspires you (and your partner). Ideally this would be a restful piece of artwork to bring you to a place of peace at night and in the morning.

Tip # 5 Remove bookshelves
Bookshelves or piles of books in your bedroom is not only very heavy energy, it’s a lot to think about – consider all of the words in those books swirling around in your head while you sleep! Having a book or two on your nightstand is fine. However, move the rest of your books out of the bedroom. One great idea is to place a bookshelf in your closet. That way, you have quick access to your books from the bedroom and their energy is contained.

Tip #6 Remove TVs and electronics
TVs and other electronics and electrical wires present several energetic issues. TVs are a “black hole” that suck energy; and TVs, electrical wires and other electronics also generate electromagnetic smog, which can be harmful to your health.

I recommend either removing the TV from the bedroom (preferred) or covering it while you sleep (a beautiful fabric throw can be used for this purpose.) Electronics (such as electrical wires, cell phones or Ipads) should be kept at least 18” from the bed.

Create an oasis in your bedroom and this will soon become your favorite room. You’ll feel more relaxed, calmer and more rested every day which positively impacts every other area of your life!

In the relationship arena, Feng Shui can help:

There are two main areas in your home we look at to improve relationships. One area is the partnership corner. (If you’re new to Feng Shui, click here to read my blog on Feng Shui’s mental map, the Bagua, to learn how your space reflects your life.) The other area is your bedroom, no matter where it’s located in your home. In this article, I’m focusing primarily on your bedroom. Ideally, this should be your favorite room in the house, an oasis that is both romantic and peaceful.

Let’s first talk about the things to AVOID in your bedroom:

  1. Clutter: As in every area of your home or office, clutter represents stuck energy. It’s also distracting. So, if you’re trying to get your partner in the right mood, removing clutter from the bedroom will help them feel less overwhelmed and more relaxed.
  2. Dirt: This can represent staleness in your relationship. To keep your Partnership fresh and new feeling, keep your bedroom dusted and clean. You will sleep better too!
  3. Dead Things: One client I worked with had pictures of dead relatives decorating a corner of her bedroom! Sometimes we place things in spaces without really think about the metaphorical message we are sending. You want things that are alive and thriving in your bedroom and Partnership area of your home. Remove any dried flowers from your bedroom (and home) as well.
  4. Pictures of your kids and other people: Even if the relatives are living, we do not want them invading our bedroom, right? And kids certainly are important in our life, but again, we do not need them coming between us and our partner. The bedroom is your personal partnership space.
  5. Toys and stuffed animals: We want to be an adult in our relationships so childish things do not belong in the bedroom. If they are keepsakes or mementos that you love, they can be placed in another area of the home – perhaps in the Creativity and Children area.

Next, let’s talk about the things you DO WANT in your bedroom. What can you do to get the love lava flowing again or to attract your soul mate?

  1. Two equal size/weight night stands: This symbolizes equality in the relationship and is particularly important if you currently do not have a partner. What does it say if one partner has a large dresser on their side and the other a small nightstand? Or if one partner has no nightstand at all? Will they have much say in the relationship? Matching lamps will bring additional balance and harmony to your love connection.
  2. Art symbolizing what you want in your relationship: Look at the art on your bedroom walls. Is it romantic? Or do you have pictures of a frozen lake? Is it peaceful and copacetic or showing conflict? Are there single people or animals depicted in the paintings? That single cowboy picture not only shows a desert, but the guy is alone, right? That leads me to the next tip…
  3. Pairs of things: Pairs represent partnership and intentionally placing pairs of things in your bedroom will help balance your relationship.
  4. A current picture of the two of you, if you’re in a partnership, should be placed in your bedroom and will help solidify your bond. Sometimes I recommend a wedding picture be placed here too, to help you remember how you felt when you fell in love.
  5. Vibrant, living things: To really promote a healthy sex life, place 9 lush plants in the bedroom. Then, make sure you keep them alive!
  6. Add Pink and Fire: The partnership color is pink and adding a dash of it here or there intentionally will boost your budding or rekindling relationship. Adding the element of fire, which is all about passion, will further heat things up. You can use the color red to represent fire or physical fire (like candles) or triangle shapes. We don’t like fireplaces in bedrooms, because it’s too much energy to allow you to sleep well. However, the Partnership area of your main level is a perfect place for a fireplace.

Making changes in your Partnership area and bedroom with intention means taking time to really think about what you want to cultivate in your relationships.

Feng Shui Tips for the Bedroom for Health and Relationship Improvements

Learn how to take your bedroom for the ho-hum to the “Feng Shui wow” with simple tips by Karen Rauch Carter.  So much time is spent in this important room for rest and rejuvenation as well as reconnecting with your partner.  Take the time to incorporate at least one of her suggestions and feel better and sleep better – for your overall health!

Feng Shui Bedroom tips, Karen Rauch CarterOn average, one third of your life is spent in your bedroom. I think it is practically impossible to “waste money” on creating the perfect bedroom as it is your most impacting room of your house! Here are my tips for bedrooms if your love life seems stale or is non-existent, or your health could use some improvement, or you are looking for a new or different outlook on life:

  1. Remove anything that does not support love/passion and health/rest. If your bedroom looks more like an office or multi-purpose room, your environment is working against you. If you want to go the extra mile with feng shui, try to get a good balance of the five elements in there as well.
  2. If you are looking for a major change, then stretch yourself and make major decor changes within the bedroom. In other words, “Don’t buy the same old comfort zone stuff that will get you the same old love and health-life situations!”
  3. Buy a wooden bed if you have the choice. Metal beds can conduct electrical fields which can be a health concern. Avoid having anything plugged-in near your bed, and especially no electrical blankets (even if they are plugged in but not turned on they can be harmful!), heating pads, or massage pads.
  4. Check the lighting level to see if it is not too harsh (yang) or too dim (yin). Listen for distracting sounds and try to alleviate or remove.
  5. Avoid large living plants or water fountains in the bedroom.
  6. Avoid large mirrors in the room. You should not be able to see yourself reflected in any mirror when in your bed.
  7. Avoid sharp metal within the bedroom (knives, axes, swords, guns, scissors, etc.) Sharp metal near you in bed usually results in “being cut” in life – as in surgeries.
  8. Create a headboard for the bed and place it against the most solid wall in the room – cure poison arrows or “bed in line with doorway” lines by hanging a crystal between the bed and the negative item.

Don’t settle for a “6″ Bedroom when you can have a 10!!!!!

Creating Harmony at Home

When you think of your home, do you think harmony? Life can seem anything but harmonious, chaotic at times. Busyness, demands take energy and leave us drained. We need a place for retreat and restoration.  We need to Create Harmony at Home by Julie Ann Segal

What does a harmonious home look like? One way to define harmony is a “pleasantness in arrangement”. By paying special attention to design and maintenance of our homes, we can help cultivate a sense of harmony. We can create a place to come home to that’s pleasant for us and our families.

I believe that when you change your space, you change your life. As an Interior Designer and Feng Shui Practitioner, I’ve observed firsthand that if rooms feel chaotic, you’ll have little chance of finding a sense of harmony, little chance of restoring yourself from the hectic pace of life. Rooms should be pleasant, calming. Your mood should instantly shift when you set foot in the door.

Pare Things Down & Start Fresh

Clutter breeds chaotic energy. Too many things in our homes means too many things visually distracting us, vying for our attention – offering little peace.  Decluttering miscellaneous things, and careful editing of décor, artwork, and furniture are key.

Once your space has been decluttered, you can look at adding new, special touches in certain areas, with the intention of creating a calming, nurturing ambiance. You can do this many different ways, such as by adding softer features like candlelight, restful colors, indulgent fabrics and rugs, maybe even a water feature or relaxing music.

Recent clients of mine set a great example for paring down. When I met the Baumanns, they were on a mission to live a freer and easier life – less possessions, less square footage. Leaving their five-bedroom home in Eden Prairie, Shari and Tom’s aim was to downsize and start fresh in Minneapolis.

Bring Nature Inside

Creating Harmony at HomeWith that goal in mind, I helped the Baumanns transform a brand new, empty penthouse apartment overlooking Lake Calhoun into a beautiful contemporary living space. We created a haven for them with all new furniture, artwork and finishes in keeping with the apartment building’s unique style.

Besides minimal clutter, we designed a nature-inspired space, with visible natural elements and organic shapes. We brought the lake and the landscape – the harmony of nature – inside, which feels peaceful and restorative. “Interweave” by Cynthia Starkweather-Nelson (art pictured here, with the couple) is one piece amongst many we found for the Baumanns. They fell in love with it, and it’s a magnificent addition that completes the living space. Nature’s inspiration is carried in details throughout the apartment.

Don’t Forget the Bedroom

Creating Harmony at HomeDoes your bedroom nurture you? It’s probably the most important area of the home to pay extra-special attention to. Unfortunately, bedrooms are often one of the last places people put energy into decorating. They should be a much higher priority. Bedrooms are the places we heal and refresh our bodies and minds. It is essential that they have a harmonious feel.

For the Baumanns, we created a place to rest with simplified furniture and décor, but finishes that still feel rich and comforting. As with the rest of the apartment, the colors and lighting are soothing. The bed is lit from underneath; besides adding warmth, it creates a floating effect for a hint of magic.

If your bedroom isn’t helping you find peace amidst life’s chaos, change is in order. Transform this most-important space into one that makes you feel supported and calm.

Your home is the closest energy to you. It’s a mirror – reflecting what’s there back to you. Take some time to assess your space, and how it’s serving you. Ask yourself, is it comfortable? You’ll feel comfort. Is it beautiful? You’ll dwell in beauty. Is it your style? You’ll be right at home.

If your space lacks harmony in any way, decluttering and design changes can surely bring it into balance, so you can have a place for retreat, to get the restoration your body and spirit need.
