The Interview…

Q: Please describe your very first coming into awareness about Feng Shui.
A: Laura: I think the first time I truly became aware was over 20 years ago, I was single, and tired of the quality of men I was meeting. My friend suggested I try feng shui and lent me a book. I bagua-ed my space, made a few simple adjustments, and long story short, two weeks later I met the man who is now my husband. I decided I wanted to learn more about this amazing practice, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Anjie: Feng shui has always been in the background for me. Being aware of my environment, and the impact it has on me was part of my upbringing. This awareness was solidified in my twenties when I was looking for a way to bring more mindfulness and spirituality to my career. I took my first feng shui course at the Open Center in NYC and fell in love with the practice.

Q: What is your branch of Feng Shui? How have you made it your own?
A: We teach a traditional approach to Black Sect (BTB) feng shui. We have had the good fortune to have had amazing teachers and mentors, we honour them and H.H. Master Lin Yun, by closely following the lineage and passing on this collective wisdom to our students.

Because of our backgrounds in interior design and architecture, Mindful Design Feng shui School is a unique blend of mindfulness practices, traditional BTB feng shui, and business school.

Q: How has Feng Shui changed your life?
A: To put it simply, feng shui brought us together. Feng shui brought us to where we are today – founders of the Mindful Design Feng Shui School. The study and practice of feng shui allowed both of us to begin brand-new, unique, heart centered, joyful careers as entrepreneurs. It has strengthened our qi, our confidence, and given us the tools to hone our own intuitive gifts.

Q: Describe your school’s approach to teaching Feng Shui.
A: Mindful Design School takes a practical and hands-on approach to feng shui, our goal is to make sure our grads have the right tools to confidently work one-on-one with clients. We support our students so they can succeed. Students learn traditional BTB teachings, design details, reading floor plans, and most importantly how to apply them in a client situation. We show our students how they can combine their gifts with feng shui to create a unique offering for their own businesses.

Q: What is the latest area of expansion for your school?
A: We are currently working on bringing senior feng shui teachers on board to teach advanced standalone courses and workshops, such as Nine Star Ki. We are also in the process of creating two new feng shui business courses that focus on building your client base and manifesting growth in your business.

Q: Besides yourself, what does your school offer that is unique to Feng Shui training opportunities?
A: Our name was not by accident. We have meditation and mindfulness practices integrated into our feng shui certification program. Anjie Cho is a trained dharma arts teacher in the lineage of Shambala, and we have a module dedicated to cultivating your qi and building a meditation practice.

Q: What is your guiding philosophy about teaching Feng Shui?
A: Our guiding principle about teaching feng shui is to be true to the tradition and lineage of Black Sect feng shui. We honour the golden chain of wisdom. This is the reason we offer all the materials in our certification course live and in real-time, and do our best to transmit the teachings one-on-one to our students. Fundamentally, our hope and joy is that our students exceed and succeed us, because that means we have done our jobs as teachers.

Q: What is your favorite nugget of wisdom about using Feng Shui yourself?
A: Laura: It is so important to meditate and reflect in order to cultivate good qi, but you also have be ready to meet people where they are. Sometimes a client may not be ready to work on their own qi. Focusing on the physical space may be a better place to start. Hanging a feng shui crystal or moving a desk can sometimes be all they need to create a meaningful shift. Keep it simple, don’t make anyone feel wrong or fearful, because good feng shui is about flexibility and compassion.

Anjie: By connecting with the spaces around us, we can begin to further relate to and celebrate our outer and inner worlds. Feng shui says that we are interconnected with everyone and everything is alive, that there can be magic in making your bed every morning, gazing out the window, or walking through a doorway.

Q: What additional training does your school offer or plan to offer?
A: We are launching a Level 3 Post-grad Feng shui & Business course. It is a mentoring style 6 module (live & online) program where feng shui practitioners can case study their own business. We will cover everything from contracts, and branding to advanced cures for both residential and commercial clients. It is open to grads of the Mindful Design Program, we will also be accepting graduates and practitioners from other programs on a case by case basis.

The Interview…

Q: Please describe your very first coming into awareness about Feng Shui.

A: I read a magazine article about a hot air balloon company in San Diego that had tons of business but was losing money. The story told about how their feng shui consultant came in and pointed out that there was a roof leak over the bathroom which was in the Wealth gua, as well as a dripping faucet and a running toilet. The consultant told them they were not paying attention to details and recommended they call someone to fix the roof and plumbing. They did, and when the time came to write the repair person, their office manager was out to lunch, so they had to sit down and write the check themselves. When they did, they saw that she had been skimming money out of their bank account for years. My thoughts were: 1) What is feng shui? and 2) What is a Wealth gua? This was so long ago there was no internet. I had a hard time tracking down books about feng shui back then, but I was determined.

Q: What is your branch of Feng Shui? How have you made it your own?
A: I practice BTB Feng Shui. I have made it my own by blending it with quantum physics, today’s technology, my in-depth understanding of symbolism and archetypes and my ability to create my own ritual cures.

Q: How has Feng Shui changed your life?
A: EVERYTHING has changed since I discovered Feng Shui. Long story short, I now know how and why things in my environment do or don’t support me as needed AND I know what to do to cure that. I love everything about my environment and my life within it. I live in the most amazing place that is filled with meaningful and magical elements. Everything my eyes see, I truly love. Feng Shui taught me that.

Q: Describe your school’s approach to teaching Feng Shui.
A: I am all about the empowerment of my students. As a master teacher trained in accelerated learning, I am able to transfer knowledge and provide experience at levels that thrill the new Feng Shui Practitioners. They start out as professionals the first morning of the first day of class, providing and participating in an actual hands-on consultation. This is multiplied each day of their training so that by Friday, they have had a solid week of BEING what it is they intend to BE. They have performed the transcendental energy shifts themselves, so they know what to expect and how to do them on their own. They leave me as professionals, ready to take and pass the IFSG Red Ribbon Professional exam.

Q: What is the newest addition to your curriculum?
A: At Tomorrows Key, virtual consultations now include performing transcendental cures. This works because of entanglement. Most people now have the technology that allows us to visit, no matter on which continent they live. This allows my students to serve folks all around the world.

Q: What is the latest area of expansion for your school?
A: This year I am celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the publication of my book, Feng Shui & Moon Magic with a double dose of workshops each month, both of which are attendable live in person or online from anywhere. This book explores the different energy brought be Moon each month. For example, March is the time for pansies, not pumpkins. The energy difference is real – and it matters! The Feng Shui & Moon Magic Workshops focus on the theory and knowledge to be explored on the second Sunday of each month. The Practical Magic Workshops are for some witchy crafting of cool things to support the energy for the coming lunar cycle. We have painted ceramic piggy banks to celebrate the Year of the Pig; created sigils to integrate into vision boards overlaid with our own faces in every image to bring us cold hard cash (and it WORKED!); and made our own set of Druid Casting Runes. The next month we will be weaving dream catchers with magical raven feathers to screen out the negative thought forms that float through our dreams and assembling Neptunian Amulets to protect our homes during this challenging yin year. Cool stuff and fun crafts with folks of all ages all over the world. We do have us some great Feng Shui Fun!

Q: Besides yourself, what does your school offer that is unique to Feng Shui training opportunities?
A: I am now offering virtual training in almost every subject I teach. This allows folks in other countries to take most of the training without having to incur the cost of the travel. We work with digital applications that allow consultants to literally see the microwaves and radio waves passing into and through the environment, as well as with the technology that allows us to see back in time to what landforms were like in previous decades, sometimes as far back as the 1940s!

Q: What is your guiding philosophy about teaching Feng Shui?
A: The environment must be shifted according to the preferences and perspectives of the client, not the consultant. It is the responsibility of the consultant to align the meanings of heir cures with the minds involved. If what you do or have is meaningless, then, well, it’s meaningless. The magic is in the intent, in the meaning given to it by the mind. The consultant brings the guidance. The client gets to pick the flavor.

Q: What is your favorite nugget of wisdom about using Feng Shui yourself?
A: The Celestial Animals are your friends. Look first to your support in your bed, then in your “spot,” and then at your table. After your home supports you, look next to your work, where you spend most of your remaining time. Learn to handle the Celestials and know you travel with quite a powerful posse!

Q: What additional training does Tomorrows Key offer or plan to offer?
A: I am a teacher of the wisdom. As such, I offer online classes in The Nature of the Soul; Teacher Training for that; my own creation The Art of Living Your Life; Energy Clearing Workshops that train to certification in 4 sessions; the Mysteries Revealed, which is taught as a Lunch & Learn on Fridays at noon CST which takes students through the works of Helena Blavatsky – Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine, and then Manly P. Hall’s The Secret Mysteries of All the Ages; Sacred Geometry & Geomancy, which is taught across 6 consecutive Saturday afternoons and trains architects and entrepreneurs in the siting, design, and creation of sacred spaces that connect Heaven to Earth, bringing the divine to play in the every day. I offer downloadable studies of Feng Shui, the Tarot and symbolism; and Practical Magic; and even more. As I mentioned, I am a teacher of the wisdom. It is my job to reveal the esoteric information so many have sought for so long. Now is the time for the wisdom to be shared.

The Interview…

Q: Please describe your very first coming into awareness about Feng Shui.
A: It was truly an “AhHa” moment which I remember so clearly as a turning point in my life. Feng Shui was being discussed during a 2 hour PBS special and after seeing the program, I was absolutely, positively “hooked”. It mirrored a reflection of who I am as a person… a focus on balanced design & helping others achieve their goals in life. I followed up with a 6 hour class and then received my Certification. The rest is history!

Q: What is your branch of Feng Shui? How have you made it your own?
A: BTB (Black Sect Tantric Buddhist School of Feng Shui). I follow the guidelines of BTB closely according to the teachings of one of my first teachers, Professor Lin Yun.

Q: How has Feng Shui changed your life?
A: WOW! Now THAT is a question! The life changes have been massive. And fabulous! We were going through an extremely challenging valley in life, and after implementing Feng Shui in our home… Voila! New career opportunities appeared in unusual ways. Helpful people popped up from nowhere. Stuff started to happen to reform the paths in our family. I have been able to follow my passion of design and have found my true life path with Feng Shui.

Q: Describe your school’s approach to teaching Feng Shui.
A: Each student joins the class with an exciting energy to learn. My method is to continue that flow of energy while using a light hearted approach to the serious subject of Feng Shui. My technique includes examples of real life experiences using various Feng Shui adjustments, and the stories of success that are achieved.

Q: What is the newest addition to your curriculum?
A: The newest teaching program is through the addition of webinars. I’ve started a series of short, affordable classes that focus on particular aspects of Feng Shui.

Q: What is the latest area of expansion for your school?
A: We are now in Florida, too! And we will be hosting our first weekend retreat from March 1 to March 3, 2019, in Sarasota, FL which will focus on the middle areas of the Bagua: Sand, Surf, and Sun (Earth, Water & Fire)

Q: Besides yourself, what does your school offer that is unique to Feng Shui training opportunities?
A: Much of the Certification training is held in person. We also travel off site to conduct Feng Shui and Space Clearing consultations. The class also visits a design showroom where we analyze the 5 elements of Feng Shui in furniture to learn how each piece of furniture can be used in various guas.

Q: What is your guiding philosophy about teaching Feng Shui?
A: Everything is in perfect timing. Timing is always exactly as it should be for each student or client as they implement Feng Shui in their lives. I view myself as the catalyst to share the information of Feng Shui when that energetic time appears.

Q: What is your favorite nugget of wisdom about using Feng Shui yourself?
A: Always keep moving forward.

Feng Shui Red Envelope Tradition

The Feng Shui Red Envelope Tradition Explained – the time-honored tradition rooted in traditional Chinese folk custom and culture by Peg Donahue

As a feng shui practitioner I often receive questions about the Red Envelope tradition, so I thought some background would be helpful.

The red envelope practice is a time-honored tradition rooted in traditional Chinese folk custom and culture. The color red symbolizes good luck and power and the rectangular shape, resembling ancient shields, symbolizes protection. On special occasions, such as weddings or Chinese New year, money is exchanged in this way.

When a feng shui practitioner from the Western or Black Sect tradition shares sacred wisdom or mystical cures, one or more red envelopes with any amount of money inside are presented for their service. Some consultants request a fee plus red envelopes, others may request their fee be placed in one or more red envelopes, and others may ask for a particular number of red envelopes and leave the amount up to you. The practice varies.

As in all of life, the value you place on something is related to the value you actually receive. More red envelopes may be requested for deeply rooted issues or complex solutions. Multiples of nine are auspicious. Customarily you place one or more dollars in each envelope and give any combination of nine. Twenty seven is a strong feng shui number and 108 is very auspicious. You can also place one or more coins in each envelope. Coins add weight, which is also auspicious. The intent with which the envelopes are given and the weight that the money represents, strengthens the solutions. A monetary offering presented in red envelopes according to your ability and feelings is appropriate and appreciated at the conclusion of each consultation or exchange of information. The red envelopes energetically protect both the giver and receiver.

According to tradition, the red envelopes:

  1. Show the giver’s sincere intention, appreciation and respect for the sacred knowledge shared.
  2. Protect the practitioner from harm for inappropriately or naively revealing secret information.
  3. Strengthen and increase the effectiveness of the information given.
  4. Acknowledge the integrity of the working relationship.

Feng shui and ancient wisdom work on a variety of levels that are not always evident. Being open to the possibility that the expert may help you is fundamental.

Prior to a feng shui consultation, take time to prepare your red envelopes in a sincere manner. Slow down and quiet your energy. Reflect on what you hope to accomplish as a result of the consultation or information being shared. Then place any amount of money into each envelope. As you do so, visualize your anticipated outcome and express appreciation for the right answers coming to you easily.

Ancient wisdom is something that is learned and experienced. It is not purchased. Money is simply a carrier of energy. When you are not ready to receive the information on one or more levels, you may feel uncomfortable with the practice. You may also find a variety of issues related to money, self worth, the value of the information, and ancient wisdom traditions surface. When you feel resistance, a feng shui consultation may not be in your best interest. Look to solve your problem another way. When a student or client receives feng shui information and does not honor the tradition, I let it go. Experience has shown me that whatever action they take is not as powerful or effective as it could be, or their issue continues to linger.

The red envelope ritual expresses respect and sincerity for the expert’s knowledge as well as for feng shui practices and traditions. The expert takes the red envelopes home and blesses them to strengthen and increase the effectiveness of the information shared. Some practitioners place the red envelopes on an altar for nine days before opening them. Others may sleep with them under their pillow. The blessing and nine day ritual harnesses ancient wisdom and empowers the information that was exchanged.

Red envelopes can be purchased online, card stores, office supply stores, in any Chinatown, or you can make them out of red paper or paint/color a white envelope red. In a pinch, use a new black pen and write “RED ENVELOPE” on a white envelope. Any new, unused red envelope works.

When I began my practice, I was uncertain about incorporating the Red Envelope tradition into my practice. In an amazing twist of synchronicity, the day of my first consultation I returned home with my red envelopes and found a large box stamped “Red Envelope” on my doorstep. I was stunned! There are no coincidences. I immediately got the message. A beautiful gift from one of my sisters arrived unexpectedly from the gift company “Red Envelope.” I had never heard of it before. On a deep level I got the message loud and clear. Of course I would incorporate the Red Envelope tradition into my practice.

Over the years I have received all sorts of red envelopes. One day a client presented me with nine gorgeous red envelopes she made using her finest red paint. She expressed her sincerity and appreciation by putting a lot of thought and energy into each envelope. I was so touched by this outpouring of respect and appreciation. I often receive homemade red envelopes in which the entire family participates, imparting their sincerity and intention. This can be an amazing family experience. Other times clients go out of their way to find beautiful red envelopes or they purchase red envelopes with a particular intent and symbol in mind. All practices work. Sincerity, respect, intention, and appreciation for all that we do and don’t understand are what matter most.
