Q: Please describe your very first coming into awareness about Feng Shui.
A: I have always been interested in color, interior design, mystical things ( like tarot and palmistry), as well as symbolic art. I can remember as a kid, loving to create Barbie’s house and the city she lived in more than anything else. I loved to rake leaves as a young kid, because I would rake them into floorplan designs, that could be as elaborate as I wanted. Then one day, in a Barnes and Nobles, perusing the ‘New Age’ section, I came across a book called Feng Shui for the Soul, and I realized it combine all those things I loved into one cool ‘thing’. I was hooked.

Q: What is your branch of Feng Shui? How have you made it your own?
A: I am a practitioner and Master Teacher of Interior Alignment®. I love the client centered and nature related philosophy of this system. I make it even more customized for my clients as I incorporate all the senses in a consultation, with essential oils, sound, and the power of textile and touch. (Ok – we don’t taste the walls… LOL) I often blend Soul Coaching® and sometimes oracle card work with my clients who are feeling a bit lost on what they really might want to manifest in their life, and unsure how to move forward.

I love teaching this system, and my students probably get more emphasis on color and it’s many uses, healthy home practices, and the powerful ways to incorporate the patterns and energy of nature in a space. Because I’m a bit of a science geek, there’s a wee bit of quantum physics thrown into the mix. And, I believe it should be a lot of fun to learn about this amazing ocean of energy we live in; so dancing, getting messages from your guides and totem animals, playing with doll house furniture and incorporating joy into every day of class is all a part of it.

Q: How has Feng Shui changed your life?
A: Discovering feng shui changed my life in so many ways, I don’t know how to even begin to answer this. From the first discovery, when I was working in the corporate world and going through a divorce, and feeling really overwhelmed with life challenges and no clear path out; I started using feng shui to balance out the areas of my life that felt really off. And… it worked. Slowly.. but crazy coincidence kinds of things happened that allowed me to climb out of the hole I was in. For example, I wanted to study feng shui with a great teacher, but didn’t know who (this was before the internet and it was kind of hard to find out information). My boyfriend (now husband) was studying Chinese medicine and needed to go to Monterey California for a class, and I discovered there was a feng shui conference there the same weekend. But, still in the throes of a messy divorce where I was paying alimony, I had no money to go. Then magically I got a statement from my credit card company that said I had enough points for first class tickets. It started my journey of serious study of feng shui, and I would not have the amazing life I have today without it!

Q: Describe your school’s approach to teaching Feng Shui.
A: Interior Alignment® is a form based school that is very nature centered. We use the Three Gates School (BTB) bagua, but we also acknowledge that energy flows differently in the southern hemisphere and so we use a different bagua south of the equator. Our system in client centric, and we use a very specific process call Synchro-Alignment™ that allows the client to understand their connection to their home, and it’s influence on them. We incorporate ceremony, blessings and space clearing as an equal part of our full curriculum as an Interior Alignment® Practitioner, as releasing the energy trapped in a space or imbedded in objects can be integral to helping the space feel uplifting and supportive to the clients needs. We use western astrology to understand the relationship between our client and their home, and healthy home concepts ( air quality, off gassing, emfs, etc.) are a part of our curriculum as well. We also feel that learning onsite with a Master Teacher is key in allowing a practitioner to step powerfully into their practice. We teach various methods of doing consultations, and a live client consultation under the direction of a teacher is a part of every course. At our advanced levels we take the connection to nature, cycles, directions and seasons even more deeply into our work, and have a special type of consultation called Medicine Wheel feng shui that works with a 4 element system of understanding people and architecture and their inter-relationship.

Q: What is the newest addition to your curriculum?
A: Interior Alignment® is always updating it’s resources for practitioners with healthy home information. For my students at Inner Harmony, I also integrate additional information with essential oils, rocks and crystals, and the feng shui of the clothing you wear as a part of the information student receive. I’m also launching more online learning opportunities at Inner Harmony this year. Its going to be exciting!

Q: What is the latest area of expansion for your school?
A: As a teacher for Interior Alignment, I am honored to have taught the most courses, and have been blessed to have students from all over the world. It even offered me the opportunity to travel so such cool spaces as Australia and New Zealand to train new practitioners. As much as I love the courses in fun locations, I also love teaching at my home (the education and retreat center I have with my Husband, the Chinese medicine/Qigong guy). Teaching here at Inner Harmony/Inner Strength, we have 88 acres of lovely woodlands and meadows to connect with nature, I have access to my library of resources for my students who want to dive deeper into different topics, and all my space clearing tools, and teaching props ( like doll house furniture and belly dance hip scarves)

Q: Besides yourself, what does your school offer that is unique to Feng Shui training opportunities?
A: All Interior Alignment® Practitioners become a part of our larger organization with gives them a community of like minded peers trained in the same system. There are hundreds and hundreds of practitioners all over the world. When you have a question about a situation that seems unique or challenging it’s an amazing resource to not only have your teacher to ask, but tons of professionals peers. We also hold regular feng shui conferences that allow practitioner to get together, connect, share their knowledge, and of course, have fun! We offer advanced courses, and even a track to becoming a master teacher in this honored tradition.

Q: What is your guiding philosophy about teaching Feng Shui?
A: That every person attracted to this is here for a reason. We all have amazing gifts, as well as our own learning journey as we will all attract the clients who are perfect for us; just as we are perfect for them.

Q: What is your favorite nugget of wisdom about using Feng Shui yourself?
A: Embrace Change! As your goals and life changes, your space should too!

Q: What additional training does your school offer or plan to offer?
A: I’m excited about 2019 because I have a lot of powerful programs scheduled! I have a Soul Coaching® Practitioner certification program that is a perfect service for feng shui practitioners to offer those clients feeling a bit lost in life. I will also be launching several other online programs this year to deepen the feng shui practitioners understanding of the bagua, as well as powerful and practical uses of color in the home. I will co-teaching a fabulous and fun retreat this July with my friend and fellow Master Teacher Felicia D’Haiti called Embracing Magic & Ceremony in Our Lives here at my retreat center. For those trained in Interior Alignment® I will be offering Advanced Interior Alignment®/Medicine Wheel feng Shui courses, as well as Master Teacher training.

Is it the same if a robot vacuums your home?

We are always looking for ways to make our lives easier, faster, and better.  Technology can often be a great benefit to making things happen. When it comes to cleaning your home, how many of you use a robot vacuum – you know, the little device that runs on it’s own, happily sweeping away the dust bunnies and dirt left by you, your family, and your guests. Is there a downside to this lovely little invention?  Find out more from space clearing expert, Karen Kingston.

Robot vacuum, space clearing, Karen KingstonI’ve always been fascinated by how effectively vacuuming removes not just physical debris but also refreshes the energy of a room.

A vacuum cleaner is a physical, mechanical device, designed to suck up dust and all the inevitable bits that get dropped on the floor. But because stagnant energies also sink to floor level, it does a remarkably good job of revitalizing them too, through its vibrating, sweeping, sucking action. Or as Hoover’s oh so memorable advertising slogan of 1919 put it: ‘It Beats, as it Sweeps, as it Cleans.’

Robot vacuums
And now we have a new generation of robot vacuums, designed to clean up after us automatically without us having to lift a finger. The good quality ones are still too pricey to be mainstream, but it looks like the future of cleaning is heading that way. My question is, because no human operator is involved, does your home feel as clean after a robot has cleaned it as it does if you clean it yourself using a good old-fashioned handheld vacuum?

Technically (and depending on the efficiency of the model, of course), there may be no difference. The same amount of dust and dirt gets hoovered up and the floor looks equally clean. But just as food tastes different according to the love and care that is put into it by the person who cooks it, so a room can feel different according to whether it is vacuumed by a mechanical device or by a human who puts care into it. Scientists can’t measure this subtle quality, but most people can sure as heck taste it in food, and more sensitive folk will be able to feel the difference with a robot vacuum too.

So does it really matter?
Well, here we get into the realm of etheric awareness and space clearing. If you’ve ever had your home space cleared by one of the professionals I’ve trained, you will know how different it can feel after all the stagnant energies and astral imprints have been cleaned out and new, higher frequencies have been instilled. It is as if a fresh wind has swept through, cleansing and revitalizing the space at a very deep level, and resetting your home as a clean slate on which to write your life.

My husband, Richard, and I, regularly space clear our home and keep it energetically maintained in this way, so that it supports us in our lives rather than holding us back. Because of this, we have noticed a huge difference between how it feels when we vacuum the floors ourselves and how it feels when we hire someone to do this for us.

When we vacuum ourselves, we presence and own the space as we go. When a cleaner does it for us, he or she may use the same equipment, and it has the same mechanical action, but it never feels as clean. On a physical level there’s no difference, but at the higher levels, just as with food that is cooked without love and care, something is tangibly missing.

Or rather, here in the West it is. When we lived in Bali, we were fortunate to have a wonderful woman called Padmi who cleaned our home beautifully. Not just at the physical level, but at the higher levels too. The Balinese have space clearing rituals they perform on a daily basis, and they naturally carry spiritual forces of purification in their blood. Padmi did not just beat as she swept as she cleaned. She loved and cared for and presenced our home too. Ah, how we miss her now!

So there is a spiritual component that can be brought to the mundane action of vacuuming a home, and if the result can be so different when your average western cleaner does it, how much greater will this be if the task is relegated to a robot? I’ll leave it to you to experiment and discover for yourself.

What Space Clearing Brings to Mind

The term ‘Space Clearing’ conjures up many images for people… clutter clearing, smudging, ceremony, blessings, and even ghost busting.  All are correct and it’s still much more.  LuAnn Cibik explains how Space Clearing is nothing new and how it has been a practiced technique to clear and reset the energy of a home or a sacred place throughout human history.

LuAnn Cibik, Space ClearingIn our modern world, many think that smudging with white sage or drumming or ringing a bell is what defines a ‘space clearing’. In actuality, these can be a part of a space clearing, however, the rich variety of methods and the reason to choose certain tools, blessings, or even the timing for a space clearing are as varied as the reasons to have one.

Native American would cleanse and clear the energy every time a space was going to be used for a different purpose, such as before a gathering of people, and then again after the gathering to create an energy for the family.  Most people plan a space clearing when purchasing a new home, however it is also great for releasing the house you have for sale to allow it to sell more quickly.  A Space Clearing can be a huge asset anytime there is a change that you wish to honor in your life.  Perhaps you have felt stuck or stagnant lately – this could be because the energy in your home is also stuck or stagnant, and a clearing will move that energy and bring a sense of fresh starts to your life.  If you have suffered a loss, an illness or conversely even a joyful new event in life (like a new baby or marriage), you want to schedule a space clearing to release old emotional patterns of energy and to acknowledge your new life intentions.  Maybe you love to collect antiques; a clearing of those objects and the rooms that hold them could shift any stagnant energy were left behind in them.

Space Clearing is especially useful if you are experiencing emotions that you don’t understand their source!   Feel like there is a ghost or spirit present?  There are actually many paranormal experiences that are not ghosts or spirits, and in any case, professional space clearers work with these energies and patterns to release them.

Professional Space Clearers are trained to deal with dense and heavy energy that could be in a space; however, everyone can practice techniques that help to clear and uplift energy on a daily or weekly basis.  Here are a few ideas you can use to uplift and re-energize your home:

  1. Clear clutter. Clutter blocks energy from being able to move.  Items that are no longer used or loved can also be holding a negative energy, and it will ‘feel’ better when they are gone.
  2. Clean with natural products and essential oils to bring a higher vibration to your space.  It will feel better as you use them!  When cleaning, hold a positive affirmation in your mind, such as ‘I love my home, and my home loves me.’  See what a difference it makes in the space.
  3. Open the windows, and allow chi and air and sunlight to circulate.
  4. Create a home altar for a place of daily gratitude.  This brings a sense of the sacred into your home.
  5. Use good ‘feng shui’ in your space, through the position of furniture and other objects that help remedy situations of where energy can get stuck in your home.
  6. Use Salt Lamps in your space to help clear energy and also add negative ionization.
  7. Include sound enhancements. Sound is a powerful way to clear and change the energy of a space.  Use the power of your stereo to bring natural sounds into your home, or uplifting music to bring a positive vibration into your space. Chanting, toning, sounds of singing bowls, all make a remarkable difference in the energy of your home.

Here’s to a good Space Clearing in your home!

Space Clearing for Moving into a New Home

Moving into a new home?  We’ve got you covered.

One of the most important uses of space clearing is to clear out the predecessor energies of previous occupants when you move to a new home, and land your own energies in the space. Until you do this, it may never be truly yours. Residual energies from the past could affect much of what you do and how you live.  Find out more about space clearing from Karen Kingston’s best practices.

Karen Kingston, Space Clearing for a New Home If you move into a completely new building that no-one has ever lived in before, you might think this wouldn’t apply, but in my experience space clearing is still very helpful. It clears out any energies left by the builders and harmonizes the space after the disruption of all the building work, so that it immediately starts to feel like a home. Without space clearing it can take much longer for this to happen.

Is it best to space clear before you move your furniture in, or after?
Well, it’s definitely easier to space clear an empty building than one that’s full of stuff, that’s for sure. The same number of offerings are required but it’s a lot quicker and easier to walk around the space, and certainly less energy sensing, clapping and belling are required.

However the space clearing ceremony I’ve developed is not just designed to clear the stagnant energy that builds up over time in the walls, floor and ceilings of a house. It also very effectively clears the energy of objects such as furniture, decorative items, equipment and personal belongings. So it really is best to do space clearing AFTER you’ve moved your stuff in, not before. It’s also good to do it as soon as possible so that you’re not living with the energetic crud of whoever occupied the space before you (known as predecessor energy in feng shui terminology).

Why it usually works best to space clear twice
But when you first move in to a place, it’s usually chaotic for a while. You may have workmen coming in and out, fixing this and that. You may need to redecorate, have new carpets laid or buy new furniture. And it can take a while to simply decide where each item you own belongs in your new home. When all this has been done and everything calms down, it will feel very different to when you first moved in, and you’ll be different too. When your home is in chaos, parts of you are in chaos. When the energy of your home settles down, a deep part of you lands too. This is why it’s so important not to let this process drag on for years, as some people do. Weeks, okay. Months, understandable in some circumstances. Years? Life’s too short to live in limbo for so long.

The first space clearing you do soon after you move in is essential to clear out predecessor energy, but I also highly recommend doing another space clearing ceremony when you reach the point where everything is in place and your home is as you want it to be. This will allow you, and those you live with, to deeply land in the space, and will greatly speed up the process of making it truly feel like your home.

Professional space clearing or do-it-yourself?
Given the choice between calling in a professional space clearer to help with the first or the second space clearing, in most circumstances it would be best to get the deeper level of expertise for the second ceremony.

Of course there are exceptions to this, such as a situation where someone is moving into a new home where traumatic events have taken place, such as a divorce, bankruptcy, chronic sickness or some other kind of heavily imprinting occurrence. These are circumstances where it is usually best to get expert help right from the start.

Using Sound to “Clear” Your Home

Space clearing doesn’t have to be complicated. You just have to have the right intention and be sincere about dispelling the negative and bringing in the positive. And one of my favorite ways to clear a space is to use sound. “Hear” more about this by regular author, Maureen Calamia

One of the basic premises of good Feng Shui is that the space (building, room, nature area) is free of unwanted, negative energy. If negative energy resides there, the space cannot be “Feng Shui’d” into a positive space without the techniques of what we call a space clearing.

Here are some great ways to use sound to clear a space:

Using Sound to Clear Your Feng Shui HomeBells, bowls, and baubles – For use in space clearings, I have several pieces that I love to use including Tibetan bells, singing bowl, and a beautiful Balinese bell that I selected just for me. (It’s best to hear the instruments that you buy first since each resonate differently and have to appeal to you).

Historically, bells are associated with religious ritual, warding off evil spirits and connecting to heavenly energy. I always start at the front door and work my way around the home, making sure that I go into each corner of each room to break up any negative or stale energy and allowing it to dissipate out of opened windows and doors. Being the Holiday Season there is no shortage of bells in my home!

Wind chimes – Metal or wood wind chimes are a great way to keep energy flowing once you have cleared a space. They can enhance a particularly difficult spot that retains stale energy, such as corners. They are great to place over your work area, including your desk chair and stove.

Door bells – Make sure your door bells work in your home. If they don’t work properly, you are draining energy from your home.

The sound of cheer – One of my favorite ways of clearing space is to have a great, joyful party! Housewarming parties are great for new homeowners. I’ve also recommended these parties to clients that have had particularly challenging times. Parties bring lots of cheerful energy and can really move the stagnant chi in your home!

And since this is the Holiday Season, I highly recommend you have a party! And don’t forget to invite me!
